Modelling and augmenting

Modelling and other techniques are used in cultural heritage to produce virtual reconstructions, virtual environments, animations and serious games. For example, modelling techniques may be used to construct the objects that would typically be found in a room of a building at a given moment in time. The process of reconstructing normally begins with research and the identification of reference sources, these may include historic plans, drawings and paintings of the building and identification of objects that are typical for a given period period from archaeological excavations and museum collections.

Various 3D modelling techniques are used including:

  • Polygonal modelling

  • Digital sculpting

  • Animations

  • Annotations

  • and more

Modules 1.4 (and 1.4a-d) of the video training course describe the process creating a 3D model of a cultural heritage asset from scratch using modelling techniques and historic paintings as a reference.
